PRELIMINARY ROUND (RECORDING)

Length: 15-20 minutes per candidate.
The repertoire entered into the preliminary round can be performed in the three public rounds.

1 - Repertoire by Johann Sebastian Bach chosen from the following:

Prelude and Fugue in D major, BWV 532
Prelude and Fugue in G minor, BWV 535
Fantasia and Fugue in C minor, BWV 537
Prelude and Fugue in D minor, BWV 539
Prelude and Fugue in G major, BWV 541
Prelude and Fugue in C major, BWV 547
Prelude and Fugue in G major, BWV 550
Prelude and Fugue in E major, BWV 566
Fantasia in G major, BWV 571
Fantasia (Pièce d’orgue) in G major, BWV 572, BWV 572

2 - Repertoire by Olivier Messiaen chosen by the candidate.
Repertoire can be a specific movement from a work or part of a collection.

3 - A piece from repertoire composed between 1830 and 1945 chosen by the candidate.
This piece can be a specific movement from a work or part of a collection.

QUARTER-FINALS

The quarter-final round will take place on Monday 17 June 2019 at Saint-Pothin Church (in Lyon’s 6th arrondissement).
Length: 15-20 minutes per candidate.

1 - A prelude and fugue to be chosen from Marcel Dupré’s Op. 7 :
Prelude and Fugue in B major, op. 7/1
Prelude and Fugue in F minor, op. 7/2
Prelude and Fugue in G minor, op. 7/3

2 - Repertoire by Olivier Messiaen chosen from the following:
Transport de joie, from L’Ascension
Alléluias sereins d’une âme qui désire le Ciel, from L’Ascension
Dieu parmi nous, from La Nativité du Seigneur
Joie et Clarté des corps glorieux, from Les Corps glorieux
Offrande et Alléluia final, from Le Livre du Saint-Sacrement

SEMI-FINALS

The semi-final round will take place on Thursday 20 June 2019at the Auditorium de Lyon.
Length: 20-25 minutes per candidate.

1 - 2nd and 3rd movements of a trio sonata by Johann Sebastian Bach.
To choose from the trio sonatas BWV 526 to 530.
Movements must be played without repeats.

2 - Two compulsory pieces, selected from Le Livre d’orgue by Olivier Messiaen :
N° 4, «Chants d’oiseaux»
N° 6, «Les Yeux dans les roues»

3 - Repertoire chosen by the candidate.

FINAL

The final round will take place on Saturday 22th June 2019 at the Auditorium de Lyon.
Length: 40-45 minutes per candidate.

1 - In exitu Israel, a compulsory piece composed by Philippe Hersant, commissioned by the Olivier Messiaen Competition.
The score will be available on 15 March. The commissioned work will be around eight minutes in length.

2 - A piece or a series of pieces by Olivier Messiaen of 8-15 minutes in length chosen by the candidate.
These pieces cannot be the same as the pieces performed in the quarter-final and semi-final rounds.

3 - Repertoire composed between 1830 and 1945 chosen by the candidate
This repertoire must not contain any of the pieces performed in the quarter-final and semi-final rounds.

The Olivier Messiaen International Organ Competition is open to organists up to the age of 30 from all over the world. It will take place in four rounds including three public rounds to be held in Lyon, from 17 to 22 June 2019. Prizes comprise financial awards and invitations to perform in the Auditorium’s season and the AIDA programme.
