Pushing back the boundaries of architecture
Originally designed as a rehearsal hall for the Orchestre national de Lyon, the Salle Proton-de-la-Chapelle is the Auditorium’s second concert hall. Typical of the 1970s architecture, the venue features a magnificent cathedral-like ceiling made of prestressed concrete. It underwent extensive renovation during the 2023/24 season and as a result, the new venue can now host smaller and more intimate concerts as well as concerts for young audiences or ‘out-of-the-ordinary’ events.
Did you know? Robert Proton de la Chapelle was born on 27 September 1894 and died on 30 September 1982 in Lyon. He was a French journalist, writer, musician, composer and politician, and very involved in Lyon’s cultural life in the 1930s. He was the instigator of the Auditorium’s construction in 1975.
